چکیده

[1] We compare European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts 15-year reanalysis (ERA-15) moisture over the tropical oceans with satellite observations and the U.S. National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) National Center for Atmospheric Research 40-year reanalysis. When systematic differences in moisture between the observational and reanalysis data sets are removed, the NCEP data show excellent agreement with the observations while the ERA-15 variability exhibits remarkable differences. By forcing agreement between ERA-15 column water vapor and the observations, where available, by scaling the entire moisture column accordingly, the height-dependent moisture variability remains unchanged for all but the 550–850 hPa layer, where the moisture variability reduces significantly. Thus the excess variation of column moisture in ERA-15 appears to originate in this layer. The moisture variability provided by ERA-15 is not deemed of sufficient quality for use in the validation of climate models.

The two most widely used reanalysis data sets are the collaborative effort of the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) and the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Reanalysis (hereafter, abbreviated to NNR) (Kalnay et al. 1996; Kistler et al. 2001), and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) 15-year Reanalysis (ERA15) (Gibson et al. 1999). Net Shortwave Fluxes over the Ocean

Net surface shortwave fluxes (Qsw) computed from National Aeronautics and Space Administration/Langley satellite data are compared with Qsw from reanalyses of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ERA) and the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP). The mean and variability of Qsw is examined for the period 1983–91, with a focus on the tropical and summer hemisph...

A review of the temporal and spatial variability of Arctic and Antarctic atmospheric circulation based upon ERA-40

A survey of the spatial and temporal behavior of the atmospheric general circulation as it relates to both polar regions is presented. The review is based on the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) 40-year reanalysis (ERA-40), updated using ECMWF operational analyses. The analysis spans 1960–2005 in the Northern Hemisphere, but is restricted to 1979–2005 in the Southern H...

Interannual variability in the Southern Ocean from an ocean modelforced by European Centre for Medium { Range Weather

Anomaly patterns in the Southern Ocean in response to variability in the atmospheric forcing are investigated. To this end we forced the Hamburg large-scale geostrophic ocean general circulation model with surface uxes from the European Centre for Medium{Range Weather Forecasts reanalysis (ERA). ERA covers the period January 1979 through February 1994. First, the atmospheric variability of sea ...

A comparative study of quantitative mapping methods for bias correction of ERA5 reanalysis precipitation data

This study evaluates the ability of different quantitative mapping (QM) methods as a bias correction technique for ERA5 reanalysis precipitation data. Climate type and geographical location can affect the performance of the bias correction method due to differences in precipitation characteristics. For this purpose, ERA5 reanalysis precipitation data for the years 1989-2019 for 10 selected syno...
